about

Coyote Gospels 2:7

lyrics

When next door girl with the china doll hair
Betrays her lover for thirty pieces of silverware
And street vendors sell pickled relics
Foreskins and toenails that smell like sex
Taste like soap and melt like candy
And the television static screen
Is a perpetual motion machine

Virgins flirt with Mardi Gras
Enchanted by voodoo and bourbon street
Maddened by spanish fly
The walls fold into cranes and take to the sky
And the end of the world
Is a bend and a whirl
In the pattern of the wallpaper

In the lounge the band plays
I Left My Heart In San Francisco
With a calypso beat
The drinks are flat, harmless
Underage prostitutes work the room
While we waltz on the sidewalk
Tranced by the glow of a rusty streetlight
And kamikaze moths like shooting stars

The zeitgeists are out in force tonight

Below a broken window a red neon light pulses
To jazz streets that ain’t tied down
They rattle and writhe beneath our feet
Like a nest of diamondbacks
The whole city slinks with a grungy swagger
As poets seek the blind heart of midnight
We can only stagger into underground clubs
Soot-black hipsters coax rhythm
Out of dead elephant teeth
Risen from the gutter — Trumpets blast!
Over the grindstone howl of sax
And the ominous rumble of bass

Oh, what ancient magic died the night they split the atom

In the city smog I’ve dined with dogs
On bones thrown from passing cars
I’ve heard prophecies in junkshops
And on the bus great sermons rolling down the aisle
I’ve heard God in the cry of a jet engine
Fallen to earth like shards of bone china
I’ve felt God on train station floors
And in the pews of honky-tonk cathedrals
Tasted God between the legs of whores
Slept with God on wet straw beds
And in mangers built for the withering
I’ve taken him in my mouth and swallowed
the meat of the Apple
I’ve eaten the roots of ancient rivers
Lain on their red clay banks
and dreamt of hard men
crying tears of broken glass
I’ve climbs stairs to pleasuredomes
Where I suckled Mary’s breast
And tasted Coca-Cola
I’ve seen God in a ribbon of asphalt

They say Lot’s wife smiled as she turned to salt
