about

AD141A / AD141B

Volumes 3 & 4 of the "Sacred Fire" series.

In 2013 Jakob Rehlinger (aka BABEL) began working on a series of solo recordings in the vein of the improvised psychedelic-folk of his (previously solo) project Moonwood. By 2012 Moonwood had morphed into a kraut-rock influenced electro-psych duo and then its current incarnation as a full-fledged heavy space-rock jam band in early 2014.

Some of the tracks on the first volume of the "Sacred Fire Sessions" (Ceci n'est pas le feu sacré No. 1) began as a continuation of the final Moonwood solo album, The Strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the Strength of the Wolf is the Pack, while others began as demos for the band's follow-up LP Desert Ghosts. Over time, and many iterations, these sessions birthed the kosmische synth-drone album Cosmos Bleu, which left behind two complete albums worth of unused material more rooted in the Moonwood organic psychedelia aesthetic. Ceci n'est pas le feu sacré No. 1 is Strength of the Pack's spiritual successor while the percussion-based Ceci n'est pas le feu sacré No. 2 is likely where Rehlinger would've taken Moonwood as a solo artist.

Completed since early 2015, the pair of albums sat on the shelf while Rehlinger was side-tracked with Moonwood's LP and BABEL's retro-electronic "Grid Series" albums. Finalizing Mind Thief, Cosmos Bleu and the Ceci n'est pas le feu sacré albums inspired the combined electro-organic approach on This is the Sacred Fire No. 1. Side-tracked again, he produced a fourth full length, the percussion-based drone-jazz mantra companion piece This is the Sacred Fire No. 2—the unifying set which brings the preceding three albums full circle.

"This Is Sacred Fire is full of ghostly voices. Synths wave and wander in the back of tracks, while melodic, melancholy instruments parade throughout to highlight the strange space you find yourself in. Everything is very intimate, with the saxophone holding onto most of the echo.

What will stick out, beyond the godly noises and droning artifice, is that the texture is the focus on these recordings. Painting a picture always works best with form and rigidity pushed out of the way a bit, and Babel gets that right on these sacred concoctions.

A couple of quick notes:

"PANZER TANZER" is a quake of heady distortion and quivering sax lines.

"DER JAGER" is the winding wind of saxophone and the programmed dawn coming together to share stories.

"OMNE IGNOTUM" is what I want them to play at my zen funeral."
